Understanding Plantar Fasciitis: What You Need to Know
Hello, Endurance community! Today, I'm excited to kick off our discussion on a common foot injury that many endurance athletes encounter: plantar fasciitis. If you've ever felt that nagging pain in your heel, especially after a long run, when you switch into a new pair of shoes or an overused pair of shoes, this post is for you!
What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia-the thick band of tissue connecting your heel to your toes-becomes inflamed. This condition is prevalent among athletes due to the repetitive stress placed on the feet during activities like running, jumping, and even long walks. It also can become quite chronic if not treated quickly, so if you or someone you know if suffering from pain similar to this reach out today!
Common Symptoms:
Heel Pain: Often sharp or aching, particularly in the morning or after long periods of sitting.
Stiffness: You may notice tightness in your arch or heel.
Tightness: Through the bottom of the foot or even up into the ankle or calf.
Swelling: Swelling may occur around the heel area.
Who is at Risk?
While anyone can develop plantar fasciitis, certain factors increase your risk, such as:
High-impact activities (running, jumping sports ie. Basketball, Volleyball)
Poor footwear choices
Tight calf muscles or flat feet
Poor mechanics and muscle imbalances
Understanding what plantar fasciitis is and its causes can empower you to take action. In our next post, we'll explore how chiropractic care can effectively treat this condition. Stay tuned!
